Polite Swearing

I have three favourites that I use in the office: Tripe, Bullocks and Bugger.
Tripe is by far the most used one. In case you are unfamiliar I will give examples on how to use them.
What a load of tripe.
This is bullocks.
Bugger. (stands on it's own quite nicely)

There are other milder words such as drat but they don't have the same oomph. They really fall flat and you don't get quite the relief.
Of course, in a pinch, you can always use crap. It's a classic, and very popular on the Homestar Runner cartoon site.

Don't get confused by words and phrases that sound like swears but in reality are not.
Phrases like: mutts nuts, boxers bell end, and poodle plums are actually complimentary. These are English and Scottish phrases so don't ask my anything about them.

Fitness Progress

What is the best way for charting progress? Depends. What are you trying to do - lose fat? I think a simple tape measure is a great tool for that. However the body burns fat in the extremities first so before you lose it in the gut you will lose it in the arms and legs. If you are watching the "problem areas" you may get frustrated and quit.
Try this - take a picture with your shirt off (Women may wear sports bras) and put it on the fridge.
Then I want you to start that training and diet program that you have been reading about. Doesn't matter which one. When you have finished I want you to take another picture, scan both of them and send them to me. My email is in my profile screen. I'll even offer a prize to the most improved. My Kompressor. Accept the challenge. I dare you.

Absolute Failure

Kiven Wenman - The guy we aspire to be, except for the shaved head part.

John Casper - the "smart one", also the most obsessive and the most likely one to be injured. He has small legs. How can he be stronger than me on squats?

The follower. I don't have any idea what I'm doing. Thank God I have those two guys to copy.

My friend, John Casper, is the smart one who makes up the weight training plan. We are both in our mid 40's and in the past have been injured through stupid training (trying to keep up with Kiven). Men's Health has a good plan for guys like us so we tried it for November and December. We didn't get injured but we weren't making any big gains. So John has now revised the plan to go to heavier weights less reps. We have also added two Yoga days to prevent ligament and tendon damage.
As for the weights we try to do 5 sets of each exercise. We try to keep tension on the muscle throughout the sets. We are aiming for three types of muscle failure:
Concentric Muscle Failure - you can't lift the weight anymore
Static Muscle Failure - Your muscles are so wiped out that you can't hold the weight in a steady position at any point.
Eccentric Muscle Failure - You can't control the weight as you lower it.
When you have reached failure on all 3 types you have reached Absolute Failure.
Three days a week I look forward to Absolute Failure. Wednesday is the the leg workout which is the worst because I can't even walk down the stairs without holding onto the handrail. That's when you know you had a good workout.

Bogey is, according to his owner, the smartest Retreiver in Vancouver. She says that he can tell left from right. I suppose that could come in handy.

We were at the dog park with two retreivers, Bogey and Max on Saturday. I did notice Bogey peeing on his tennis ball. And I did notice that Adrian's dog Max can shake a paw.

So maybe Bogey isn't the smartest Retreiver, but he loves his momma.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday Cindy R.
Cindy is a pretty good friend of mine, and is the one that diagnosed me with Reflux about three years ago. (Sorry I didn't believe you)
When Cindy is not at the Hospital making people's lives better, she is running with Bonnie, at Pilates, at Yoga, climbing Grouse Grind, or walking Bogey.
She is the owner of the brilliant Golden Retreiver Bogey, and lives with Rick and their cat Cleo. They live in that area where all the other cool triathletes live.

I have been suffering from Bronchitis since last September! The coughing symptoms just wouldn’t go away no matter how many antibiotics I took. I finally asked my family doctor if I could be referred to a specialist and he sent me for tests in early December. As invasive as those tests were they still couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get rid of the Bronchitis.

So they sent me to another specialist. And I finally know what is causing my bronchitis symptoms. I have Reflux! – I don’t have Bronchitis!!
This is especially funny since my friend Cindy R., M.H.Sc. Manager, Speech-Language Pathology, diagnosed me with Reflux several years ago, but I refused to believe her because I had already self diagnosed myself with chronic bronchitis. Apologies to Cindy. You were right!

I have a faulty valve that lets small amounts of acid up from my stomach and the acid gets into my lungs. The specialist says that this is very common in endurance athletes because we are so hard on our bodies and I guess we break the valves. The doctor who diagnosed it is from the Pulmonary unit at St. Pauls.He wondered why I was sent to the other specialist in the first place back in December. The other specialist was an Internal Medicine specialist but he couldn't figure it out.
I may have the operation to fix the valve but for now I am going to take pills and a puffer.That should stop the inflammation in my lungs which is causing the bronchitis symptoms.

I go back for a checkup in 3 weeks to see how things are going.
I went to Shoppers Drug Mart with my prescription - $500!!!!!!!!!!! for two months worth of pills and a puffer. Holy Man. That's um... $3000 per year.
I'll never be able to be a consultant again since I need the Extended Health Benefits of a big company. Now that I know it’s not Bronchitis I am going to start training again. I went for a 45 minute run at lunch on Friday and I feel great!
